Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) - Lot 95
Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) MEDALLION OF ALBERT CAMUS, 1961 Workshop plaster Signed and daté : Damboise 1961 Inscribed (in relief, around the perimeter) : Albert Camus 1913-1960 Some stains and lacks D. 45 cm Inv. MD. S-031G-00d Marcel Damboise and Albert Camus met in 1934 in Algiers, during an exhibition at the Villa Abd-el-Tif: Damboise, aged 31, exhibited there as a boarder; Camus, aged 21, went there as an art critic for L'écho d'Alger. A friendship develops between them, nourished by the love of the Greeks. It continues until the writer's fatal accident in 1960. After Camus' death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to leave an effigy of Camus for posterity. One of the medallions, made of stone, adorns a monument in honour of Camus erected in Villeblin in the Yonne, the town where his brutal death occurred.
