Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) - Lot 13
Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) Caesar Crossing the Rubicon Cast by Siot-Decauville Bronze with a gold and brown patina Signed “J.L. GEROME” on the plinth Bears the stamp “SIOT DECAUVILLE PARIS” and the number “200H” H. 39 x W. 39 cm The famous Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme successfully ventured into sculpture for the 1878 World’s Fair. He created statuettes—most often painted—drawing inspiration from his own paintings. Influenced by Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquity, by the East, and even by contemporary history, Gérôme created masterful sculptures with an eye for detail, materials, and color, making his works—with their Symbolist or “Neo-Pompeian” overtones—a body of work that stands apart in the landscape of late 19th-century French sculpture.
