Henry Arnold (1879-1945) - Lot 144
Henry Arnold (1879-1945) Diane Model created in 1929; our proof circa 1930 Bronze with shaded brown patina Signed and dated "HENRY-ARNOLD 1929". H. 37 cm In 1929, Henry Arnold took a plaster cast of Diana with Pheasant, created a year earlier, and created a simplified version. The arms are removed, the attributes disappear and the hairstyle is reworked. In this form, the figure of the goddess regains an antique-inspired aesthetic. The model was produced in eight bronze proofs, and an enlarged version was exhibited in the gardens of the Arsenal marina in Paris. Trained as an ornamentalist, Henry Arnold joined Ernest Barrias' studio at the École des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons, and took part in the creation of the Salon des Tuileries in 1923. Related works: -Henry Arnold, Diane accroupie, circa 1930, bronze, signed "Henry Arnold", Paris, Musée d'Art Moderne, inv. AMS 396 ; -Henry Arnold, Diane au faisan, 1928, plaster, unlocated. Related literature: -Odile Arnold, Emmanuel Bréon, Henry Arnold Sculpteur, Éditions des amis du musée des années 30 1994, model listed under no. cat. 37, p. 62, reproduced on p. 6.
