Paul ACKERMAN (1908-1981) - Lot 77
Paul ACKERMAN (1908-1981) Rider Mixed media, ink and pastel on paper, mounted on cardboard, signed lower right and titled on a hang tag. 30 x 41 cm Paul Ackerman was a French artist of Romanian origin, born in 1908 in Romania to a family of art-loving notables. He died in Paris in 1981. He moved to France with his parents in 1912 to escape Jewish persecution, he abandoned his law studies and devoted himself to art from the 1930s, initially working in the decorative arts, designing posters, fabrics and jewelry, notably for Elsa Schiaparelli and Marcel Rochas. A recluse during the Occupation, he lived in the South of France, where he met Pierre Bonnard, who was to have a lasting influence on him. Back in Paris after the Liberation, his career was launched with the Pacquemend prize in 1950, and he began to exhibit his work in Paris galleries, beginning with Raymond Creuze in 1947. An essential figure of the Second Paris School, Ackerman's versatility set him apart, as he alternated between abstraction and figuration, multiplying techniques and media in a totally free approach. Conceived in cycles and series, his work is strongly marked by literary and philosophical references, and fascinates by its esoteric and symbolic dimensions.
