Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) - Lot 262
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) Woman's head, mouth open Bronze with brown patina Signed "Steinlen" and illegibly stamped H. 8.8 cm on a cubic base H.4 cm Related works : -Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923), Tête de femme, la bouche ouverte, between 1859 and 1923, bronze head, signed "Steinlen", bears an illegible stamp, H. 8.8 x W. 6.4 x D. 5.6 cm, Paris, Musée d'Orsay, inv. RF 2958. Our small bronze head highlights a little-known facet of the work of Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923), through a theme rarely explored in sculpture by the artist. Although Steinlen is best known for his deep attachment to the cat figure, which was the source of his popularity and which he used particularly in sculpture, here he depicts a woman's head twisted as if projected forward. An unusual treatment of the subject compared to the other female figures in his lithographs, as can be seen in the copy of Racahout des arabes kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris (Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, Racahout des arabes, circa 1905, print, H. 48.9 x W. 38.8 cm, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, n°inv. ENT DN-1 (STEINLEN,ALEXANDRE)-FT 6).
