Jean Mayodon (1861-1929) & Emile Antoine... - Lot 127 - Crait + Müller
Jean Mayodon (1861-1929) & Emile Antoine Bourdelle (1893-1967) Virgin with an Offering Ceramic Bears the monogram of the artist H. 64 cm Conceived as a monumental and commemorative work, the Virgin of the Offering was commissioned from Émile Antoine Bourdelle by the son of an Alsatian industrialist, Joseph Vogt, to fulfill his father's wish to celebrate the preservation of his village during the First World War. Static and triumphant, the Virgin presents her all-powerful son, like an offering. Bourdelle creates a maternal figure, imbued with intimacy, for which he takes his wife and daughter as models. A reduction of the Virgin with the Offering was presented at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1922 and met with great success, notably underlined by the painter Maurice Denis in these terms in the newspaper La Vie: "This Virgin Mother is a masterpiece of modern art and of religious art of all times" Works in connection : Émile Antoine Bourdelle, Vierge à l'offrande, 1920, marble and gilding, 67 x 25.5 x D.16 cm, Lausanne, Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, inv. 51
