Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) Portrait of Marie... - Lot 110 - Crait + Müller
Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) Portrait of Marie Bengesco Model created in 1880 Plaster print Signed Rodin and dedicated to "A. Bengesco" on the neck H. 20.5 cm Provenance: Gift of Mrs. Marie Bengesco to Mrs. Gilberte Emile Mâle, by donation to a private French collector. Throughout his illustrious career, Auguste Rodin immortalized the Woman, the embodiment of both Life and humanity. The sculptor offered her a place of choice in his reflection, his life and his work. If we know above all the portraits of his lover and pupil Camille Claudel, Rodin also made other portraits of women who shared his life, whether they were members of his family, mistresses or friends, such as Rose Beuret, his wife, Ma- dame Fenaille, the wife of the collector Maurice Fenaille, or the Duchess de Choiseul and Gwen John, his lovers. This charming little woman's head represents Marie Bengesco, whom he met in 1880 through his brother Georges Bengesco, a literary critic of Romanian origin. The sculptor offered his portrait in plaster to the young woman with the permission to make prints. Five copies were offered to Dr. Cantacuzène, to his cousin Tsigara, to a Romanian painter, to the Bucharest Museum and to Gilberte Emile-Mâle (1912-2008), a major figure in the restoration of French heritage and daughter of the famous art historian Emile Mâle. From our proof, a bronze was cast in Rome, by an anonymous caster, in the years 1934-1935 (gift of Madame Mâle in 2008 to the Chaalis Abbey, patinated bronze, N°M.J.A Chaalis. Sc3167).
