Jean-Auguste Barre (1811-1896) The Bayadère Amany Bronze with brown patina Signed and dated " A. Barre Ft 1838 Bears the founder's mark " Fie Richard Eck et Durand Fdeur Fcants ". H. 45 cm In the 19th century, when the dance genre was in decline, Jean-Auguste Barre explored this theme in sculpture. After having made portraits of Fanny Elssler and Marie Taglioni, ballerinas of the Opera, Barre made in 1838 that of Amany. She is a young sacred dancer from India who performs at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. The performance of the dancer, her beauty and her exoticism arouse the admiration of the Parisian public.
