Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) Bust of Albert Leclerc, 1940-1941 Lacquered gum plaster Signed (on the back in pencil): Damboise 40 x 19.5 x 22.5 cm Inv. MD S-165-00 Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent Marcel Damboise executed this bust of the sculptor and painter Albert Leclerc (1906-1975) when he was mobilized and assigned to the camouflage section, where many artists met. Albert Leclerc trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Jules Coutan (1848-1939), Paul Landowski (1875-1961) and Charles Despiau (1874-1946). He exhibited in various Salons and obtained several prizes, such as the Vital-Cornu prize in 1935, the Algerian prize in 1947 and the grand prize for sculpture at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1971. Decorated Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1974, he received many public commissions, such as The Angel for the church of Barentin in Seine-Maritime or The Athlete at Rest for the Pierre Coubertin Stadium in Paris. A bronze print, dated 1940, made by the founder Claude Valsuani, is kept in a private collection.
