Émile-Joseph Carlier studied drawing and sculpture in his native Cambrai, in Valenciennes and in Paris. His apprenticeship, interrupted by the Franco-Prussian war and the Commune, continued with François Jouffroy. The Cambrian sculptor was encouraged by Henri Chapu and Ernest-Eugène Hiolle. From 1874 to 1926, he won numerous medals at the Salon and at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
