- Grigory GLUCKMANN (1898-1973) Two nudes, 1933 Oil on panel. Signed, dated and located Paris lower right. 71 x 92 cm Born in the city of Vitebsk in 1898, Grigory Gluckmann entered the Moscow Academy of Arts in 1917. Fleeing the revolution, he emigrated to Berlin, then to Paris in 1920. In the French capital he began a prolific career, supported by the critics (monographic exhibition at the Druet Gallery, 1924; Charpentier Gallery, 1934; Drouant Gallery). He also exhibited in London and New York. During the Second World War, he emigrated to the United States, first to New York and then in 1945 to Los Angeles where, supported by the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, he began a flourishing career. The gallery, located on the famous Wilshire Boulevard, benefited from the clientele of Hollywood celebrities. If the second part of the artist's career may appear to be dominated by commercial ease, his works from 1925-1932 are marked by the "return to order". This international aesthetic trend was born after 1918 from the desire to return to classicism, the founding value of Western civilization, but also to break with certain avant-gardes whose developments led to the negation of art (Dada). If our painting - one of the artist's most important - appears at first glance to be enigmatic, it can easily be interpreted within the historical and cultural framework of the interwar period: two naked young women overlook an idyllic landscape where a mother and her child and a rider are moving aimlessly. But their dejected posture from behind and the sterile aridity of the panorama convey a melancholic inanity and the obsolescence of a Golden Age. The artist had learned this brilliant craft during his academic training and he exploits all its resources, especially in the glazes, a technique used in ancient painting: a mysterious poetry emerges, giving the complexions their sensual subtlety.
