AUTEL ADJA FON, Republic of Benin Wood,... - Lot 219 - Crait + Müller
AUTEL ADJA FON, Republic of Benin Wood, horns, plant materials, beads, glass, metal, padlocks, keys, small shells, lye blue, composite materials. H. 58 cm Still active today in Benin and Togo, the voodoo cult is inherited from a long religious tradition that regulates community life. Each of the objects and colors chosen by the officiant are representative of the main vodun of the cult. Of complex construction, and mixing elements of all kinds up to small padlocks of Western manufacture, the Adja altar that we present here rises up in a large central element, the horns of a caprid forming the arms of an effigy treated as an apparition. At its feet, a swarm of propitiatory offerings and a statuette presented frontally. The important accumulative materiality, the dimensions of the work, and finally its completion, make it a precious testimony of this religious art. Few examples of this type and importance have been presented at auction until now. Although of a different type, but of the same culture, we will mention in particular the two fetishes from the former Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert collection (see Christie's sale, 27 June 2018, lots 36 and 37).
