Gaston Etienne le Bourgeois is a "child of the ball", he is the son of a stone sculptor in the service of historical monuments, it is there, at the side of his father, that he learns the profession of sculptor. He moved to Paris in 1900, frequented the Jardin des Plantes and became friends with Rembrandt Bugatti. He specializes in animal sculpture, which he does with different materials. He participates in the Salon des Artistes décorateurs and the Salon d'Automne. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs devoted an exhibition to him in 1921. Le Bourgeois took the publication of his work very much to heart and endeavoured to limit the edition of his pieces to a few numbered prints. The Musée National d'Art Moderne Georges Pompidou holds the ebony version (inv. AM 792 S).
