CEMENTER TJI WARA BAMBARA, Mali Wood with... - Lot 439 - Crait + Müller
CEMENTER TJI WARA BAMBARA, Mali Wood with a brown patina shaded red to glossy black, metal, accidents, indigenous restoration. L. - H. 64 cm Tji wara crest representing a male hippotrague antelope, the body as if leaping, the long horizontal twisted horns extending the geometrically shaped head. Six initiatory societies governed the social and religious life of the Bambara. The fifth society was the tji wara society, whose crest, during ritual dances, praised the fertility of the land and community values. These crests were always worn in pairs, the male entity evoking the sun, the female entity evoking the earth. According to vernacular myths, a hippotrague antelope is said to have transmitted the first grain to men. For related models, see Dominique Zahan, Antelopes du soleil - Arts et rites agraires d'Afrique noire, Éditions A. Schendl, Vienna, 1980, fig. III 69 plate 95, III 73 and 74 plate 96, plate 97.
