Pieter van LINT (Antwerp 1609-1690) David... - Lot 28 - Crait + Müller
Pieter van LINT (Antwerp 1609-1690) David with the head of Goliath David and Saul Pair of brass instruments. 88 x 108 cm Restorations on the second one. These paintings can be related to several works by van Lint, such as his Renaud and Armide (copper, 70 x 87 cm, sold at Sotheby's New-York, January 19, 1984) whose Renaud is very close stylistically to the model of our David with the head of Goliath. David's fight against Goliath is an episode of the Bible from the first book of Samuel in the Old Testament. This episode tells the story of the battle in which David, a young shepherd, faces the giant Goliath, the respective heroes of the kingdom of Israel and the Philistines. After having shot him, David slices off Goliath's head, a moment represented in our painting. The episode of David before Saul relates the passage from the book of Samuel in which the shepherd is introduced near Saul to dispel by the harmony of his harp the dark ideas by which the king was tormented.
