Sparrman, André. - Voyage au cap de Bonne Espérance, et autour du monde avec le capitaine Cook, et principalement dans le pays des Hottentots et des Caffres... translated by M. Le Tourneur. Paris, Buisson, 1787. 2 volumes in-4, bound in full contemporary seeded calf, the boards decorated with a triple frame of gilt fillets, spines decorated with large gilt fleurons, author's title and tomaison (inverted tomaison), double fillet on the edges, marbled edges - Complete with the frontispiece, the folding map and the 15 pl. (13 fauna, 2 arms and utensils) of which 3 folded. Sparrman (1748-1820) was a Swedish physician and naturalist, student of Linnaeus, who after a 6 months stay in the Cape, joined Forster's team during Cook's second voyage. Back to the Cape in 03/1775, he undertakes with Immelmann, from 07/1775, an expedition of 8 months in the interior of the lands where he is interested more especially in mammals. It should also be remembered that Sparrman was a fervent abolitionist.
