EAMES Charles (1907–1978) EAMES Ray (1912–1988) Charles (19 - Lot 164
EAMES Charles (1907–1978) EAMES Ray (1912–1988) Charles (1907–1978) EAMES Ray (1912–1988) HERMAN MILLER (Published by) “RAR” rocking chair, with a fiberglass-reinforced polyester shell dyed solid sea-foam green, featuring long, visible fibers. Base made of welded galvanized steel rods in a lattice pattern, known as the “Eiffel” design, resting on two bent birch glides; the shell is attached to the frame by four large-diameter rubber shock-absorbing pads with a central washer. Circa 1954–1955 Height: 66.5 cm – Width: 63 cm – Depth: 67.5 cm - History: Zenith Plastics, in Gardena, California, began manufacturing the fiberglass shell in 1950 for Herman Miller; it was the first one-piece plastic chair with an unpadded, bare surface. The straight edge and the large-diameter shock-absorbing feet with central washers indicate that this example belongs to the second generation, produced from 1954 to 1955; the first generation, from 1950 to 1954, is recognizable by its so-called “rope edge.” The rocking version was discontinued in 1968, but Herman Miller continued to offer it to every employee who became a parent until 1984. - Bibliography: John Neuhart, Marilyn Neuhart, and Ray Eames, *Eames Design: The Work of the Office of Charles and Ray Eames*, New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1989; model shown on p. 141.
