Lattré, Jean. — Maps of the Orléans, Briare, and Loing Canals, engraved by order of...; [by] the Duke of Orléans. [Paris], Lattré, n.d. [c. 1780]. In-plano, green half-vellum with modern corners - Engraved title within a frame crowned with the coat of arms of the Duke of Orléans and 20 double plates mounted on a tab (out of 21), comprising: 1 general map of the three canals (folded) - 8 maps of the Orléans Canal (the 6th folded) - 6 maps of the Briare Canal (the 3rd is missing) - 5 maps of the Loing Canal. The plates are in fine condition. Included is: a map by Nicolas De Fer from 1716, “The Junctions of the Two Great Rivers, the Loire and the Seine, via the New Orléans Canal and the Briare Canal” (22 x 32 cm on a sheet measuring 27 x 38.5 cm), accompanied by its descriptive note detailing the history of the Briare Canal from 1606 to 1640 and that of the Orléans Canal from 1679 to 1702. The permission granted by Louis XV to the Duke of Orléans to construct the Loing Canal was granted in 1719.
