A collection of four letters and three autograph notes by artists or writers. 1 /- Rodin, Auguste. - Note addressed to Mrs. Waldeck-Rousseau apologizing for being unable to accept an invitation, September 11, 1889. 2/ - Detaille, Edouard. - Note addressed “to his dear Georges,” thanking him for sending drawings and describing himself as a “poor victim” of the flu, December 16, 1889. 3/ - Ziem, Félix. - Letter addressed to a “Dear Friend.” Ziem complains of having been “blackballed by an overwhelming and irrevocable majority, rejected by the assembly of my fellow watercolorists; I remain alone with my dishonor (…) lost illusions, incoherent slaps in the face, rivalries, and other disheartening aspects of life—this one was missing from the collection, and you will find out if I brought it upon myself. The trappings of success lulled me into resting on my laurels.” Ziem sends New Year’s greetings to his correspondent, whose “talent and intelligence I admire, and who made a kind gesture on my behalf.” n.d. 4/ - Carrière, Eugène. - Two notes addressed to Mr. Alboize regarding lithographic stones that the latter is to deliver to him, February 1895 and January 1898. 5/ - Jacque, Charles Emile (1813–1894). - Letter addressed to Jules Claretie apologizing for not having visited him due to the heat: “My great desire to bring you my *Bergerie* was dampened by that simple thought.” He enclosed with this letter a proof of *Leda with the Lobster*—“a more or less failed attempt at a female nude in etching”—and a small series of “seven new, unimportant plates.” July 19, 1884. 1 double-sheet on cream paper, with a small tear at the fold. 6/ - Eluard, Paul. - Note addressed to a “dear friend” apologizing for being unable to accept his invitation, inviting him to come see him, and asking if he is thinking about the text by Dalí. 1 small sheet on brown paper.
