Lot of 19th-century German alphabet books.
1/ - Hildebrandt, Ad.M. - *Heraldisches Alphabet*. Wilhelm Rommel. Frankfurt am Main, 1884. Large quarto in cardboard binding presenting, in alphabetical order, the coats of arms of 25 prominent German families (with a brief note on each family). The first letter is in chromolithography. (excluding the letter “i”).
2/ - Geikler, Rudolf (ill.). - *Das Deutsche ABC Burch*. Stuttgart, Julius Hoffmann, [c.1880]. Illustrated quarto in color on cardboard—text and 25 color pages covering various subjects (X and Y on the same page). The first two folios are misaligned.
3/ - Busch, Wilhelm. - Schnaken Schnurren. Munich, von Braun & Schneider. In-4, cardboard binding, illustrated in color and gold—31 pp. in color, the first 6 of which present an animal alphabet (Naturgelchichtiches Alphabet). Beige cardboard cover illustrated with humorous scenes featuring animals and characters.
4/ - Schaeppi, Sophie (illustrator). - Aunt Sophie’s ABC. Frauenfeld, J. Huber. Large in-4, percaline cover illustrated with a child playing with a ball – Bilingual French-German alphabet book illustrated with 25 photogravures (title and 24 letters, excluding “i” and “y”) produced by Brunner & Hauser (Zurich) based on Schaeppi’s original Romantic drawings.
5/ - König, Gustav & Thäter, Julius. - Güldenes ABC. Gotha, Justus Perhes, [c. 1854]. Small oblong in-4 bound in red cloth with a design of golden flowers [2 title leaves] and [24 leaves of the alphabet, excluding the letters I and X]. Lutheran alphabet with biblical moral lessons selected by Gustav König and illustrated with delicate engravings by Julius Thäter.
6/ - Frolich, Karl von. - ABC for Well-Behaved Children in Silhouettes and Rhymes. Kassel, G.E. Vollmann, Kassel, 1870. German alphabet book in Gothic and Roman type. Each letter is accompanied by a short text and illustrated with silhouettes. On the yellow-backed cover, silhouettes (Chinese shadows) of children in a garden. Protective Plexiglas binding (modern).
7/ - [Anonymous] - ABC for Well-Behaved Children. No place, no date [late 19th century]. Small in-4 hardcover with full-color illustrations depicting three children, a dog, and toys—12 pp. of sturdy cardboard, with 6 color images per plate. The illustration for each letter consists of an image of children engaged in an activity, a depiction of an animal, and an object in the center. There is no letter “i,” and the letters “X,” “Y,” and “Z” are grouped together on a single page.
