Auguste Chabaud (1882–1955) - Lot 139
Auguste Chabaud (1882–1955) Reclining Man Model created in 1911–1912 Bronze with black patina Signed “A. Chabaud” Bears the foundry mark “GUYOT FONDEUR” Provenance marked “E.A. II/IV” H. 18 cm, base W. 11.8 x D. 15 cm Around 1911–1912, in Graveson, Auguste Chabaud briefly experimented with sculpture. He created a few statuettes carved directly from stone as well as plaster heads. Inspired by Cubism, the forms are characterized by fine, deep incisions. In 1912, Chabaud exhibited two polychrome plaster heads at the Salon des Indépendants. This little-known aspect of his work was highlighted in an exhibition that brought together, for the first time, some forty of his sculptures at the Auguste Chabaud Museum in Graveson in 1996.
