Christophe Fratin (1801–1864) - Lot 16
Christophe Fratin (1801–1864) Fratin Portraying Himself Bronze with a light brown patina Stamped “FRATIN” Bears the foundry mark “Fie de L Richard Eck et Durand” H. 20 cm While self-portraits by 19th-century French artists are often tinged with self-indulgence, Christophe Fratin depicts himself in the form of a caricature. The disproportionate limbs, the grimacing facial expression, and the numerous animals serving as attributes characterize this amusing portrait in the style of the famous caricatures by his contemporary Edouard Dantan. Related literature: Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, *Fratin, Decorative Objects & Romantic Sculptures*, Paris, Univers du Bronze, 2000, models listed under nos. 3 and 4, pp. 5–7.
