Gaspard GRESLY (Isle sur le Doubs 1712 - Besançon 1756) - Lot 9
Gaspard GRESLY (Isle sur le Doubs 1712 - Besançon 1756) Young girl with lantern On its original canvas Misses and lifts 73 x 61 cm Provenance: Lemud collection (according to an old label). The theme of the half-body figure emerging from the shadows by candlelight was treated on several occasions by Gresly. One of his most famous paintings is Jeune paysan à la chandelle, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Besançon (see the catalog of the exhibition Gaspard Gresly (1712-1756), un peintre franc-comtois au XVIIIe siècle, Besançon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 1994, n° 1, repr). The subject was common in northern schools, with artists such as Schalken, and Gresly was probably also influenced by Georges de La Tour, whom he met through engraving during his formative years.
