Maria PERGAY (1930-2023) - Lot 237
Maria PERGAY (1930-2023) Very rare Z stool, circa 1970 Stainless steel plate bent and stiffened by four angle brackets One weld to be revised on the upper part of the seat base angle and another on the lower part of the intermediate angle Slight traces of glue on the seat 45.5 x 44.5 x 37.5 cm Provenance: collection of American architect and decorator Constantin Vichey (1933-2026), then by descent This stool was acquired in New York in the early 1970s from Harvey Probber, Maria Pergay's distributor in the United States, for the decor Constantin Vichey designed for the Lakeville, New Jersey home of his father Luben Vichey and his mother-in-law Anna Vichey, for which he also drew up the plans. The architecture of this house and its interior design were the subject of several publications in the specialized press in the United States, and a photographic report from the time of construction by Joseph Kugielsky, shows the desk and its stool in situ. After the couple's death, Constantin Vichey brought the set back to France, first to furnish a family home in the Gard region, then to his personal residence in Bordeaux, where it remained until his death. This extremely rare piece of furniture, which does not appear in the book devoted to the complete work, is however well documented by American press articles of the time about Maria Pergay's furniture.
