Peter Briggs (b. 1950) - Lot 209
Peter Briggs (b. 1950) N265, 1993-1994 Celadon-glazed terracotta Titled in black felt-tip pen under the base "N265" and oriented forward by an arrow 28 x 16 x 12 cm Peter Briggs' work is part of a morphogenetic research in which sculptural form is seen as a process of transformation analogous to natural phenomena (growth, tension, aggregation). Initially developed in the field of metal, this approach was extended to ceramics in the 1990s. In the "celadon" series, Briggs mobilizes a technical register historically associated with East Asian production. The artist experimentally recontextualizes celadon, adapting it to contemporary volumes often marked by surface irregularities and internal tensions. This research culminated in a project at the Centre artisanal de Poncéaux (Moulins de Paillard), initiated by Céline Robert and Hubert Paris. Briggs works closely with Matthieu Robert, a specialist in high-temperature enamels. For Briggs, celadon acts as a revealer, revealing the interactions between structure, surface and firing process.
