Francisco ARIZTIA (1943-2022) - Lot 110
Francisco ARIZTIA (1943-2022) Lunch in Chile, 1974 Oil on canvas, signed, titled, dated and located in Les Sables-d'Olonne on reverse Very slight loss of material 97 x 130 cm Francisco Ariztía (1943-2022), trained in Santiago de Chile, Belgrade and Paris, is a Chilean artist whose career has been deeply marked by exile. After settling in Europe following the arrival of Pinochet in 1973, he moved to Portugal in 1975, where he developed a protean body of work (painting, engraving, silkscreening, sculpture and mural art), always closely linked to the memory of his homeland. In Déjeuner au Chili, produced in Les Sables-d'Olonne in 1974, the artist uses a figurative aesthetic to transform an everyday scene into a critical narrative. The allegorical figures that structure the composition (Death, War, the Complacent Bourgeoisie, the Oppressed People and the mask embodying Cultural Identity) denounce the effects of American imperialism on Chilean society. In this work, strongly influenced by the contemporary spirit of Figuration Narrative, Ariztía channels a sensitive and universal political commitment, different from his creations in the collections of the Gulbenkian Centre for Modern Art, as well as numerous contemporary art museums in Italy, France, Germany and Chile.
