Alexandre Charpentier (1856-1909) The thinker Circa 1900 Bronze with shaded brown patina Signed "A. Charpentier Engraved with "4X" under the base Total H. 10 cm, including circular onyx base H. 2 cm This figure of a Thinker, inspired by the work of Rodin, probably stood on top of an enamelled stoneware inkwell made by the ceramist Auguste Delaherche (1857-1940), first presented at the Salon national des beaux-arts in 1895. A second version of this inkwell, topped by Charpentier's Penseur, was produced in 1899 in collaboration with Maurice Dufrène (1876-1955) for the store "La Maison Moderne".
