Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827 - 1875) - Lot 79
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827 - 1875) Presumed portrait of La Mère de la Palombella or the Old Transterranean Woman Oil on paper mounted on canvas. 38 x 27 cm (The lower left and right corners are missing and there is some spotting) The model is generally identified as the mother of Barbara Pasquarelli, known as "la Palombella", a young Italian woman with whom Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux had fallen passionately in Rome. Related works: Laure de Margerie, Patrick Ramade, "Catalogue raisonné des peintures de Carpeaux", in Carpeaux peintre, 1999, works under numbers 228, 239, 235 and more particularly numbers 236 and 237. We would like to thank Laure de Margerie, Director of the Répertoire de sculpture française, who wrote the "Portraits" section in the Catalogue raisonné of Carpeaux Peintre, for her kind commentary on our painting.
