Charles Cordier (1827-1905) - Lot 76
Charles Cordier (1827-1905) Moorish woman from Algiers singing Model created circa 1859; circa 1859-1865 Bronze with light brown, brown and bronze patinas Signed "CORDIER" below the shoulder H. 46 cm Charles Cordier's lifelong interest was in the study of human diversity. While retaining the scientific idea of ethnographic study, he set out to show the public, in the wake of the abolition of slavery, "the ubiquity of beauty". In the course of his travels, Cordier, as a humanist, boldly overturned the preconceived ideas of this conformist fin de siècle to show the beautiful singularity of peoples around the world. Drawing on the "morphotype" studies he brought back from his travels, Charles Cordier created a series of sculptures combining polychrome marble, onyx, enamel, bronze and silver of great novelty and luxury.
