Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) - Lot 73
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) The Abduction of Hippodamia Model created 1877-1879; circa 1880 Bronze with shaded brown-green patina Signed "CARRIER-BELLEUSE" on the terrace Stamped "BRONZE GARANTI AU TITRE PARIS". Titled "L'ENLÈVEMENT" in a cartouche on the front H. 65 cm, terrace W. 48 x D. 24 cm Inspired by Book XII of Ovid's Metamorphoses, a terracotta version of this group depicting the abduction of Hippodamia on her wedding day with Pelops by the centaur Eurityon was exhibited in July 1871 by Carrier-Belleuse in Brussels. In 1874, for the prestigious Bois de Boulogne Races, Carrier-Belleuse, in collaboration with Christofle, produced a silver trophy. The group met with great success. Carrier-Belleuse produced a second version for the market. He simplified the composition: the centaur's cloak disappeared, the upside-down wine jar was moved and the centaur relaxed his embrace. These modifications give the group a more neoclassical aesthetic, reminiscent of the great Renaissance groups such as the Rape of Dejanira and John of Bologna's Rape of the Sabine women. While the figure of Hippodamie corresponds to the voluptuous forms typical of Carrier-Belleuse's female figures, the centaur's exaggerated expression and inflated musculature suggest the possible involvement of Auguste Rodin, then present at the master's Brussels studio. In 1870, the young sculptor had worked with his master on the Vasque des Titans, whose morphotypes are unmistakably similar to that of the Eurityon centaur.
