Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883) Zingara, Neapolitan dancer Model created in 1857; published by Barbedienne from 1867 for this reduction Bronze with brown patina Signed, located and dated "C. CLESINGER / Rome. 1858" on the trunk Bears the founder's mark "F. BARBEDIENNE. FONDEUR. "Dedicated "SOUVENIR DES OUVRIERS / A MR AUGUSTE DESGENETAIS / 4 SEPTEMBRE 1869" in a cartouche on the front of the base. Bears the incised numbers "35 /39" and the inscription "1600 f" in ink on the inside. H. 132 cm A voluptuous dancer with tambourine, Zingara is one of the works sent by Auguste Clésinger during his stay in Rome. For this gypsy figure, the sculptor drew his inspiration from the opera of the same name, first performed in Naples in 1922, and from the character of Esmeralda in Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, published in 1831. Presented in marble at the 1859 Salon, the model met with great success. In 1858, Clésinger commissioned Barbedienne to produce a bronze version.
