Jules Cavelier (1814 - 1894) The city of Paris presents the Emperor and Empress with the Imperial Prince's cradle Preparatory model for the medal commemorating the birth of the Prince Imperial; pair of plaster medallions Small chips around the edges Diam. 50.5 cm Jules Cavelier, a pupil of David d'Angers, was awarded the Premier Prix de Rome in 1842. He was responsible for the medal - cast by André Vauthier-Gallé - commemorating the gift offered by the City of Paris to Emperor Napoleon III and Eugénie on the occasion of the birth of the imperial prince in 1856: a sumptuous ceremonial cradle, now in the Musée Carnavalet. Our two plaster models are enlargements of both sides of this medal. Designed by Victor Baltard, this cradle was entrusted to the most skilful Parisian craftsmen of the time: Froment-Meurice, the Manufacture de Sèvres and the cabinetmaker Grohé.
