MU 81 ; -Jacques-Edouard Gatteaux, Le Chevalier d'Assas, bronze, H. 46 x W. 24 x D. 15 cm, Nîmes, musée des beaux-arts, inv. 1206 This is a bronze reduction of the monument to Louis Assas, known as the Chevalier d'Assas, created by Jacques-Edouard Gatteaux and inaugurated in 1830 at Le Vigan (Gard). Died at the Battle of Clostercamp in Westphalia, on the night of October 15 to 16, 1760, during the Seven Years' War, the young soldier is depicted leading the assault, sword brandished skyward. According to tradition, he launched the famous cry "À moi, Auvergne, ce sont les ennemis" (To me, Auvergne, these are the enemies) popularized by Voltaire in his Précis du siècle de Louis XV, and repeated on the Gatteaux monument. Trained by Jean-Guillaume Moitte (1746- 1810) and winner of the Grand Prix de gravure en médailles, the sculptor presented the model at the Salon of 1827 and a bronze reduction at the Salon of 1844.
