Among François Rude's large body of work, Le départ des volontaires de 1792, which adorns the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile, holds a major place. The revolutionary event is celebrated in a representation with an antique air. The Marseillaise or Victory, in the guise of a female allegory, overlooks a group of warriors, including our Gallic. Imbued with strong emotion and vivacity, this central figure in the composition unveiled in 1836 embodies a timeless warrior force.
