Encouraged by Emmanuel Frémiet, Georges Malissard specialized in depicting animal subjects. Fascinated by horses and equestrian sports, he produced numerous portraits of stallions and mares, including the horses of German Emperor Wilhelm II. From 1908, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français. After the First World War, he was commissioned by the French government to create equestrian monuments, including those of Marshals Foch, Lyautey and Pétain, as well as those of Belgian King Albert I and Spanish King Alphonse XIII.
