Elias van den BROECK (Antwerp 1649 - Amsterdam 1708) - Lot 75
Elias van den BROECK (Antwerp 1649 - Amsterdam 1708) Bouquet of flowers in a vase on an entablature Canvas Traces of signature lower left 64 x 53 cm Fred Meijer returns this floral still life to Elias van den Broeck. Born in Antwerp, the artist trained as a still-life painter in the United Provinces, first with Cornelis Kick in Amsterdam, then with Jan Davidszoon de Heem in Utrecht. He then moved to Antwerp, where he became a member of the Saint Luke's Guild around 1673-1674 and joined the art dealer Bartholomeus Floquet (1650-1690). After thirteen years in the Spanish Netherlands (1672-1685), Elias van den Broeck returned to Amsterdam. Van den Broeck's work is characterized by the finesse and realism of his flowers, often arranged in niches or carefully balanced compositions. His paintings are distinguished by their rich colors and attention to detail. Several signed variants of this composition by the artist are known: one preserved in Copenhagen (Staten Museum for Kunst); a second sold at Christie's in Amsterdam (June 23, 2015, no. 43, reproduced) and another offered at Dreweatts in Newbury (December 14, 2022, no. 67, reproduced). We would like to thank Fred Meijer for confirming this attribution.
