ENGLISH school of the late 17th century Presumed portrait of Lord Aubrey de Vere (1627-1703), XXth Earl of Oxford Paper, oval Old label on back of mount A miniature, on papper, of Lord de Vere, in armour/ Temp.James II. 8.5 x 5.5 cm Born into one of England's oldest families, Lord Aubrey de Vere spent his youth in Holland, where he joined an English regiment. An ardent royalist, he returned to England in 1651, supporting King Charles II. He was imprisoned for taking part in numerous plots, including one against Cromwell. Disappointed in his ambitions by James II, he later sided with William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution. His title died with him.
