Small bokuto (木刀) also known as a ''doctor's sword'', in fan-shaped lacquered wood, decorated with bands of red nishi-ji lacquer on a black background. Small lacquer sautes; not disassembled, possible signature not visible. Japan, Edo period, 19th century 日本,19 世纪 . Blade length 16 cm; total length 31 cm. Attached is a kozuka decorated in taka maki-e with suaka and gilt copper inlays of two horses. Oxidation, wear, deformation. Blade length 12 cm; total length 21.8 cm. Bokuto was used for personal self-defense at a time when it was forbidden for non-samurai to carry weapons.
