Megha Raga - Lot 270
Megha Raga Polychrome, gold and silver gouache on paper depicting Krishna dancing in the rain on the terrace of a lakeside palace, surrounded by musicians and two young women, one of whom is holding a chauri. Rows of red flowers are lined up in front of the terrace, and the buildings of a city stand out in the background (wormholes, wear, cut margins, painting mounted on cardboard page). India, Deccan, Hyderabad, late 18th c. Painting 22 x 14.5 cm Sight page 24 x 16 cm Provenance: acquired from the Ganeshi Lall Son gallery Megha Raga corresponds to one of the musical modes of a ragamala (garland of ragas). A ragamala is a type of painting that fuses poetry and music, evoking a mood and a season. Megha (or Megh Malhar) Raga is associated with the monsoon season, the word megh meaning cloud. It depicts a joyful Krishna dancing to celebrate the arrival of rain. The rows of flowers in the foreground are characteristic of the Hyderabad style of the 18th century.
