Small bronze candlestick, truncated cone-shaped body, topped - Lot 269
Small bronze candlestick, truncated cone-shaped body, topped by a high neck and ringed spout, with engraved and formerly silver-inlaid decoration, decorated with interlaced and knotted ribbons, forming rosettes and bows in medallions. Inside the candlestick, old collector's label indicating Indian and Persian art bronze candlestick given by Mr Bringnard (stains, wear, silver entirely erased, dark patina). Egypt or Mamluk Syria, late 15th-early 16th century D. base 10.5 H. 12 cm The decoration is typical of Egyptian and Syrian production in the Mamluk period, and is similar to that of the so-called Veneto-Saracenic, as it was intended for the Western market. See a perfume burner or hand-warmer (inv. OA 925) and a lidded box with a European coat of arms (inv. AD 20331) from the late 15th-early 16th century, in the Musée du Louvre, with very similar decoration (Carine Juvin (Ed.), Mamelouks 1250-1517, exhibition catalog, Musée du Louvre, Skira, Paris, 2025, cats. 159-160, p. 221). The small size is reminiscent of the late 14th-early 15th-century candlesticks with European arms also in the Louvre (inv. AD 28006 a and b) (C. Juvin, op.cit., cat. 155, p. 218).
