19th century FRENCH school after the antique Chlytie Marble bust Wear and accidents, head broken and reattached H. 72 cm Reference work: Rome, Clytie or Antonia, 40-50, marble, H. 57.15 cm, London, The British musuem, inv. 1805,0703.79 The antique model of this bust depicts the nymph Clytie transforming herself into a sunflower after being rejected by the god Helios. It was discovered in Naples and acquired by Charles Townley in 1772 from Prince di Laurenzano. The bust can be found in the English collector's study painted by Johann Zoffany in 1790 (H. 127x W. 99.1 cm, Burnley, Towneley Hall Art Gallery and Museum, inv. BURGM: paoil120).
