Otto WOLS (1913-1951) - Lot 66
Otto WOLS (1913-1951) Untitled, 1945 Watercolor and ink (pen), signed lower right 24.4 x 16.2 cm Provenance: estate of Albert Louville, Paris (who, during Wols' lifetime, ran the Rhumerie Martiniquaise on boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris); private collection, Paris A certificate from Dr. Ewald Rathke dated May 27, 2004 will be given to the buyer. Dr. Rathke (1926-2024), an eminent and undisputed specialist in the artist's work, provides extensive details of our work in the certificate (a translation of this text, written in German, is available to potential buyers). The notice clearly states the original provenance: It comes - along with three other works - from the estate of Albert Louville, an establishment that Wols frequented during his last stay in Paris (from December 1945 to June 1951) and where he probably paid with these works. The provenance is further confirmed by the list drawn up by Gréty Wols in 1955 of works sold or exchanged for goods and services during Wols' lifetime (a list published twice) with the note "2 gouaches à M. Louville". Dr. Rathke dwells at length on the rare qualities of this unusual, chromatically fresh sheet. The subject is reminiscent of the Barrières series, begun in autumn 1944 at the latest, but differs in that the motif is very sharp and flat, appearing in a rectangular field, like an image within an image.
