Originally from Costa Rica, Francesco Zuniga trained in his father's religious sculpture workshop. Building on his success at national fine arts exhibitions, he moved to Mexico in 1936, where he became familiar with the Cubist movement, monumental and muralist art. Collaborating in several sculptors' studios, he became professor of sculpture at the prestigious Esmeralda School. His work is influenced by both pre-Hispanic art, which he discovered at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, and modern European sculpture.
