In 1903, Francis La Monaca, originally from Italy, decided to settle in Paris, where he entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and trained in the studios of Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. He rubbed shoulders with the avant-garde and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1907. He met with some success among Parisian high society and painted many portraits.
