Lucien Schnegg (1864-1909) - Lot 111
Lucien Schnegg (1864-1909) The young heaulmière Model created in 1905; circa 1935-1950 Bronze with brown patina, Signed "Lucien Schnegg", bears the founder's stamp "LAMY / CIRE / PERDUE". H. 42.4 cm, on a blackened wooden base H. 4 cm Deeply attached to the study of the nude, Lucien Schnegg's La Jeune Heaulmière conveys a great purity of line, making this work, along with the La Vigne marble, one of his most sought-after models. The son of a cabinetmaker, Lucien Schnegg began his career as a decorator-ornamentalist. Eager to find his true calling, he went to Paris and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1884, where he joined Alexandre Falguière's studio. From 1887 to 1890, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français, then at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1892. Lucien Schnegg struggled to make a living from his art and became a practitioner in Auguste Rodin's studio. Rodin saw in Schnegg an authentic artist with "the courage to be a true sculptor, drawing everything from himself in the manner of the reformers". Schnegg's work at Rodin's studio, though demanding, allowed him to develop his own personality. Alongside Antoine Bourdelle, he became part of a "middle current" of modern sculpture, adopting a classicizing approach to sculpture. Renouncing academic art and the avant-garde, he pursued this approach by bringing together a circle of sculptors known as the Bande à Schnegg, including Charles Despiau, Jane Poupelet, Louis De- jean, Robert Wlérick and François Pompon.
