Marguerite Jeanne Carpentier (1886-1965) - Lot 110
Marguerite Jeanne Carpentier (1886-1965) Bacchus's childhood Original terracotta Signed "MJ. Carpentier H. 30 cm This group depicting the Childhood of Bacchus is part of Marguerite-Jeanne Carpentier's extensive body of work inspired by mythology. Her passion for the myths, legends and poems of the great authors of Antiquity combined with a solid training at the École des Beaux-arts and the Académie Jullian, where she was supported by director Jean-Paul Laurens. He introduced her to Auguste Rodin around 1907. Marguerite-Jeanne Carpentier documented her work in her Journal d'artiste, begun in 1930 and continued until her death in 1965. She explains her desire to follow in the great tradition of art history and the great masters of the Renaissance, discovered during her trip to Rome. She was one of the first women to attend mixed classes at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris. This status prompted her to demand equal access for young artists to training from live models, and recognition for women artists. Many of her colleagues trained in her studio between the wars. She was awarded the Grand Prix de sculpture de la Ville de Paris in 1924 and the Grand Prix de la Société Nationale des Beaux-arts in 1950.
