Eugène Léon L'Hoëst (1874-1937) Bedouin woman at the market Bronze with green-brown patina Signed "L'Hoëst", numbered "3/25" and located "LE CAIRE". Bears the founder's stamp "CIRE PERDUE / LEBLANC-BARBE- DIENNE / A PARIS", titled "BEDOUINE AU MARCHE". H. 52 cm A major figure in Orientalist sculpture, Eugène L'Hoëst trained in the religious art studio of sculptor Amédée Charron in Anjou, before moving to Paris, where he worked in the studio of Gabriel Jules Thomas. Encouraged by his master, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1906, thanks to a travel grant, he visited Italy, Sicily, Tunisia and Algeria, and later Egypt. He successfully presented a dozen plaster and bronze groups at the Salon de la Société des peintres orientalistes français in 1911. After the First World War, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français and the Salon de la Société coloniale des artistes français, as well as in Brussels and Marseille. His work is published in bronze by Barbedienne and Susse.
