António Teixeira Lopes (1866-1942) Portrait of an elderly woman Circa 1900 Bronze with bronze patina Signed and dated "Teixra Lopes 1897". Bears the founder's stamp "MEIRELLES & MACEDO / GAYA". H. 27 cm A native of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, Antonio Teixeira Lopes trained as a sculptor in his father's studio before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Porto. From 1885, he continued his training at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. On his return to Portugal in 1892, an exhibition was dedicated to him at the Palacio da Bolda in Porta. Crowned with success, he received commissions from the Portuguese nobility and public commissions. Considered the successor to the sculptor Soares dors Reis, he taught at the Porto Academy of Fine Arts between 1901 and 1936.
