Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902) Study of a woman for Glory ? H. 36.2 x W. 13.2 x D. 11 cm In July 1891, Aimé-Jules Dalou was commissioned to create a monument to the orators and publicists of the Restoration period, for the Panthéon, depicting four eras in French history. Dalou produced several sketches and designs for this monument, all of which were accepted by the commission. His first idea was to install the orators on a pedestal in a recess of the Pantheon, topped by an allegory of Liberty crowning them. In subsequent sketches, Dalou accentuated the verticality of the composition, defined the contours of the pedestal and obelisk, and reworked the figures, bodies and costumes. Our female figure probably corresponds to one of the studies for the allegory of Liberty or Glory. On his death, Dalou left a sketch that was deemed insufficient to complete the work. The monument was then attributed to Laurent Marqueste.
