Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) Brother and sister, also known as Les deux orphelins du Siège Model created in 1871 Bronze with brown patina Signed "Carpeaux Bearing several "PROPRIETE CARPEAUX" stamps with the imperial eagle H. 65 cm Depicting a grieving young boy in his sister's arms, a dog huddled at their feet, this group is said to have been inspired by two young orphans whom Carpeaux took into his studio during the Siege of Paris in 1870. Three years later, he took up this subject again in painting during his exile in England.
